School Holidays Changed to Remove Religious Connection

June 03, 2017: The Ministry of Education in Spain has proposed changing the Carnival and Easter Holidays to a week in late February and May respectively in order to remove the religious connections from the school holidays. This proposal is waiting to be ratified and implemented for the school year 2017/2018.

This is not the first attempt to disconnect religion and school holidays in Spain. Earlier this year, the county of Leon decided to change the names of the holidays to “first and second period”. Read our previous report here.
