Increasing Rate of Thefts and Defamations of the Churches in North Rhine-Westphalia

(16. February 2015) There have been recored 3.500 church burglaries since 2010 in North Rhine-Westphalia. During the past five years in North Rhine-Westphalia 3.504 church burglaries were committed. That indicates that per year, 660 to 790 church burglaries are taking place. 80% of the 785 suspects had German nationality.

NRW Interior Minister Ralf Jäger (SPD) answered to an inquiry of the CDU's parliamentary opposition, that the total damage that churches suffered since the year 2010 amounted to 2.5 million euros for thefts and the value of the stolen goods amounted to an additional 1.4 million euros. Only 14.8 percent of burglaries in churches and chapels were solved.
The CDU opposition expressed strong dismay about the fact that the objectives of burglars increasingly included to such an extent churches. "Worrying is the ruthlessness with which the churches are damaged and robbed by applying brute force," said the Cologne CDU member of parliament Christian Möbius.
