Catholic cemetery and chapel vandalised

Country: Netherlands

Date of incident: May 21, 2025

The chapel and cemetery in Doorwerth were severely damaged. A statue of Mary was decapitated, a wooden cross bearing a figure of Jesus was smashed, and debris was scattered everywhere. This shocking act has left the faith community in disbelief.

Especially as this sacred place acts as a beacon of solace and reflection for countless people, this destruction hurts deeply. The Parish Board has filed a complaint, stating also that they are unsure if this was a deliberate sacrilegious act or mere spiteful vandalism. According to Pastor Meneses, such acts of vandalism "disturb the tranquillity of the community, hurt the soul of believers, and undermine respect for holy places that are dear to us."
