Vandalism Causes Burn Damage at St. Georg Church in Freising
A church in Freising was targeted on Maundy Thursday by an act of vandalism involving candles, scattered materials, and burn damage to a confessional. The incident followed a similar case reported earlier in the year at another church in the city.
The incident occurred on Maundy Thursday, April 2, at the St. Georg Church in Freising. According to reports, approximately 200 sacrificial candles were repeatedly lit, risking a serious fire inside the church. Sand was scattered from a candlestick table, and refillable oil candles were thrown onto the ground. Furthermore, a burn mark of approximately ten centimetres was found on the confessional, probably caused by a candle. Church representatives warned that the situation could have resulted in a serious fire inside the building.
The incident follows another recent case of church vandalism in Freising. Earlier in February 2026, vandalism involving candles, theft, and spilled lamp oil had already been reported at St. Jakob Church in the city (OIDAC reported).
Police examined the incidents, but no suspect had been identified at the time of reporting.
