Icon, Cross, and Bibles stolen from Hospital chapel in Berlin

Country: Germany

Date of incident: August 18, 2026

Between 17 and 18 July 2026, an icon, a cross, a holy water font and a Bible were stolen from the Charité Chapel of a hospital in Berlin. Pastoral workers at the chapel commented on the "painful and hurtful" act as the perpetrators seem to have specifically targeted objects of religious significance.

The theft occurred between 17 and 18 July 2026, at the Charité Chapel of the Benjamin Franklin Hospital in Berlin. The stolen objects included an icon depicting the Madonna and Child, a cross, a holy water font, and a Bible. The perpetrators seem to have specifically targeted objects of religious significance, but hardly any material value.

The minister at the chapel, Annette Sachse, described the theft as "simply painful and hurtful that someone would vandalise the interior furnishings of the chapel," adding that it was particularly distressing that someone had taken items from the chapel's interior.

At the time of reporting, police had opened an investigation and encouraged witnesses to come forward.
