Crucifix in the Chapel of Santa Croce broken to pieces
On 1 September, the Chapel of Santa Croce al Piano in Colognola ai Colli was subjected to a serious act of vandalism that caused damage to furnishings, religious images, and sacred art; most notably to a crucifix which was found smashed. A man was detained in connection with the serious incident, which affected a place of worship particularly dear to the local community, arousing "indignation" over the acts.
The vandalism was discovered on the evening of 1 September 2026 at the Chapel of Santa Croce al Piano. According to the report, the perpetrator/s "caused damage to furnishings, images, and sacred works inside" the chapel. Among the damaged items was a figure of Christ; which was found torn from the wood of a 19th century crucifix, and a painting of the Pietà.
A man was detained in connection with the incident, and reports state that the mayor and the parish priest were present at the scene. Don Marco "attempted to stop the perpetrator" and promptly notified the police, thus helping to limit the damage."
