Priest dead after stabbing at Polish Benedictine Convent
A Catholic priest has died following a stabbing at a Benedictine convent in Jarosław, Poland, on 24 September, and a total of five victims were stabbed in the attack. Government officials have responded in horror at the attack, and sympathy for the members of the community. Following the attack, Rzeszów Cathedral stated that the community was filled with "great sadness" at the attack.
On 24 September, a Catholic priest was killed and four other victims injured, when a man armed with a knife attacked the clergy and worshippers at a Catholic Benedictine convent in Jarosław, southern Poland. All five victims were taken to the hospital, where one of the injured priests later died. Three of the five individuals stabbed were clergymen. According to a report, one of the priests was attacked by the perpetrator in the confessional.
The report states that a Ukrainian citizen who was in possession of a knife has been detained in relation to the incident.
Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, responded to the incident by saying that the suspect would face "the full severity of Polish law." He further remarked: "My thoughts are with the loved ones of the victims of this brutal attack." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also offered his condolences to the priest's family, and stated: "We are shaken by this evil."
Rzeszów Cathedral stated that the second priest is still undergoing surgery and that the community was filled with "great sadness" following the attack.
The motives behind the attack are currently under investigation.
