Vandals smash statue of Virgin Mary at historic chapel
A report from 15 September described two incidents of vandalism targeting the same historical chapel at the intersection of a public street. The unknown perpetrators smashed and poured paint over a statue of the Virgin Mary, damaging the pedestal, the interior of the nice, and the glass. Local residents and the parish priest were left shocked by the incident, which they described as a clear act of blasphemy.
Parishioners of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Radom were outraged by the vandalism of a wayside shrine containing a statue of the Virgin Mary, which was carried out by unknown perpetrators.
The historic chapel, located at the intersection of Biała and Kwiatkowskiego Streets, was vandalised twice: on the night of 11 to 12 September, and 13 to 14 September. The vandals poured paint over the statue and damaged the pedestal on which it stood. They also smashed the statue and damaged the interior of the niche and the pane of glass protecting it.
Built in 1930, the chapel was renovated in 2015 as a historic landmark. Local residents were shocked by this act of vandalism committed against their local spiritual monument. One of the local residents stated: "It's hard to believe that such things happen in the 21st century. If someone doesn't believe, that's their business, but to lay a hand on sacred objects is difficult to understand."
The parish priest, Fr. Roman Adamczyk, also commented: "Unfortunately, this is not merely a case of vandalism, but a blasphemous at against God and people of faith."
