Sacrilegious Theft Targets Church in Lille
A Catholic church in Lille was burglarised, with perpetrators stealing a ciborium and lunula containing consecrated hosts, an act considered desecration in Catholic belief. The incident has deeply affected the local parish community.
The incident occurred during the night of 22–23 February 2025 at the Church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul, where unknown individuals entered the church and removed several items. Among them were a ciborium and a lunula used to store consecrated hosts, making the act particularly sensitive for the local Christian community. In Catholic understanding, such acts constitute desecration and typically require a special Mass of reparation, which was scheduled for 2 March.
The parish expressed the emotional impact of the incident, stating: “Our parish community is particularly hurt by this theft, which touches what is eminently precious for us, the Body of the Lord.” The burglary was reported to the authorities, and a police investigation is ongoing.
