Public Iron Cross Torn Down
A Christian cross located in Nice was forcibly removed and discarded during the night of September 6–7. The mayor condemned the act as an "unacceptable desecration."
During the night of September 6 to 7, 2025, a wrought-iron cross that had stood for years atop Boulevard de la Madeleine in Nice was torn from its base and abandoned on a nearby sidewalk. Witnesses noted that the cross was heavy and securely mounted, suggesting that multiple individuals were involved in its removal.
Mayor Christian Estrosi condemned the incident as an “unacceptable desecration” and stated that surveillance footage is being reviewed to identify the perpetrators. He emphasised, “It is intolerable to attack Christian values and what makes up our identity.” The cross has been secured by municipal police pending restoration. The incident comes amid a reported rise in anti-Christian acts in France, with over 400 cases recorded in the first half of 2025, marking a 13% increase from the previous year.
