Sculpture of Jesus Vandalised in Les Arcs-sur-Argens Church

Country: France

Date of incident: September 18, 2025

A plaster statue of Jesus was damaged in a church in Les Arcs-sur-Argens, France, following a failed robbery, raising concerns about repeated attacks on religious property. The parish priest denounced the repeated targeting of the church and condemned the act of desecration.

On September 18, 2025, surveillance footage captured an unidentified individual attempting to break into donation boxes at the Church of Saint John the Baptist in Les Arcs-sur-Argens for 40 minutes. After failing to steal money, the person damaged a plaster sculpture of Jesus, breaking its foot—adding to prior damage to the statue’s fingers.

Father Michael Nachez, parish priest for 15 years, described the act as “a desecration” and noted ongoing thefts of religious items. He stated, “This act harms a sacred and spiritual object for believers.” A formal complaint was filed, and restoration is planned, including placing the statue in a protective glass case. The church has increased security with alarms and cameras, though vulnerabilities remain across many churches in the Var region.
