Consecrated Hosts and Sacred Vessels Stolen from Monastery Church in Bevagna
On 25 October 2025, unknown perpetrators broke into the church of the Monastery of Santa Margherita in Bevagna and stole consecrated hosts and sacred vessels from the tabernacle. The deliberate targeting of the Eucharist constitutes a serious act of desecration in the Catholic context.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of 25 October 2025 at the Monastery of Santa Margherita. According to reports, unknown perpetrators forced entry through a side door while the church was empty and went directly to the tabernacle, from which they stole consecrated hosts and several sacred vessels.
The theft was discovered by one of the two elderly Augustinian nuns living at the monastery. The prioress reported the incident to the Carabinieri on 27 October, and an investigation was opened.
The deliberate targeting of the tabernacle and the theft of consecrated hosts—central to Catholic belief—constitutes a serious act of desecration in the Catholic context. The selective nature of the theft, with reports indicating that other valuable sacred furnishings inside the church were left untouched, suggests elements beyond financial motivation.
Local reports mentioned suspicions that the theft may have been linked to esoteric rituals or black masses.
In response to the incident, the Archdiocese of Spoleto-Norcia announced a Mass of reparation to be celebrated at the monastery on 1 November 2025 by Renato Boccardo, reflecting the religious significance attributed to the violation. The Archdiocese described the theft as a “very serious gesture” and called on the faithful to renew prayer and Eucharistic adoration.
