Pomegranates Thrown at Facade of Church
Authorities in Civate filed a formal complaint after pomegranates were thrown at the parish church in an act of vandalism.
During the night of 25–26 October 2025, unidentified individuals threw pomegranates at the parish church of Saints Vito and Modesto in Civate, Italy, leaving broken and rotting fruit near the building’s façade. Mayor Angelo Isella described the incident as a “truly serious episode, also because of the significance of the place as a spiritual emblem. I cannot accept that such incidents can occur in our country, yet we must also reflect on the society we have created, given that we adults have evidently undermined traditional values.” Parish priest Don Luca Civardi added, “There is nothing to comment on; the images speak for themselves.”
Both officials filed a formal complaint with the Carabinieri. The church, located in Piazza Antichi Padri, had previously been the site of disruptive behavior, including unauthorized gatherings and nighttime property damage.
