Spanish Church was Desecrated and Robbed
Assailants broke into the Church of San Roque, stole alms, and defecated inside the sanctuary, prompting police investigation and community indignation about this act of desecration.
In Almería’s Pescadería neighborhood, unidentified individuals forcibly entered the Church of San Roque, operated by the Marianist Fathers, and vandalized its interior to steal money from alms boxes. The perpetrators damaged doors, cabinets, and lighting fixtures, and defecated inside the sanctuary, an act interpreted by parish leaders as deliberate desecration.
The incident occurred on the site of a former mosque that has previously experienced religiously charged disturbances. The National Police launched an investigation, and the brotherhoods of Calvary and Carmen confirmed that “the sacred images are in perfect condition,” while expressing hope that the event was isolated.
The Fundación Española de Abogados Cristianos filed a complaint citing possible crimes of robbery with force and profanation (art. 238 and 524 of the Spanish Penal Code) and stating that “it is intolerable the increase of christianophobia that we are experiencing in Spain.”
