Man Threatens and Insults Participants of Religious Procession in Violent Aggression
A 20‑year‑old man is accused of attacking Christian worshippers, vandalising religious images, and causing disruption during Semana Santa processions in Almería’s Pescadería district in an act that the prosecutor’s office described as intended to “terrorise the Christian community”.
On the night of 10–11 April 2025 and into the following days, a 20‑year‑old man of Moroccan origin lacking legal residence in Spain allegedly carried out multiple acts of religious intolerance in the Pescadería neighbourhood of Almería during Holy Week, including removing a banner depicting the crucified Christ from a private balcony and brandishing a large knife while verbally confronting Christian faithful and entering the Iglesia de San Roque during a Vía Crucis, where he “gave strong shouts, made unpleasant gestures at the images and insulted the faithful from the altar,” according to the public prosecutor.
The prosecutor’s office described his conduct as intended to “terrorise the Christian community” and is seeking a prison term of four and a half years and, alternatively if convicted, his expulsion from the country for seven years.
