Religious Statues Beheaded in Biguglia

Country: France

Date of incident: October 14, 2025

In mid-October 2025, three sacred statues were deliberately destroyed in Biguglia, Haute-Corse, prompting a strong reaction from the local community.

The first incident occurred on 14 October, when a statuette of St Joseph holding the child Jesus was decapitated and a statue of the Virgin Mary was smashed in a stone niche built by residents. A third statue, representing Saint André, was later found decapitated in the ruins of an old Romanesque chapel overlooking the village. A formal complaint was filed by the owner of the house located below the niche.

The damage unsettled the village, as the statues were considered both religious symbols and part of Biguglia’s heritage. On 16 October, residents gathered with local officials and the parish priest, who led a prayer and publicly condemned the desecration. Despite the reports to the authorities, no perpetrator had been identified or arrested at the time of the latest update.
