Altar and Sacred Objects Targeted in Deliberate Desecration

Country: Belgium

Date of incident: March 21, 2026

A church in Lommel was again targeted by vandals who left sexually explicit messages and desecrated the altar and religious objects. The incident forms part of a series of repeated attacks, including with arson, on the same church in recent months.

The incident was discovered on 21 March 2026 at the Parish Church of Lommel-Centrum by a city employee. Unknown perpetrators had entered the church and committed multiple acts of vandalism.

Sexually explicit messages were written on two doors of the church. In addition, cigarette butts and sanitary products were deliberately left on the main altar. A further degrading act involved placing underwear over the head of a statue of a saint.

The placement of waste and intimate items on the altar, a central place of worship, as well as the defacement of a religious statue, indicates behaviour going beyond simple property damage and points to elements of desecration of the sacred space. The church had already been targeted repeatedly in recent months by theft, vandalism, and arson-related incidents. Among previous cases, a valuable monstrance had been stolen. This pattern suggests ongoing vulnerability and repeated targeting of the site.

The repeated nature of these attacks has raised growing concern within the parish community.

“It is very sad to see what is happening to our church. A place like this is not only a historical monument, but also a space of peace, reflection, and community. Therefore, this affects the entire sense of community in Lommel,” said Koen Lemmens.

The church authorities expressed hope that the analysis of surveillance footage would lead to the identification of those responsible. No suspects have been reported at this stage.
