Man Interrupts Easter Vigil Mass Shouting Blasphemies at Sanctuary in Rome

Country: Italy

Date of incident: April 4, 2026

On 4 April 2026, an individual entered a church in Rome during the Easter Vigil Mass and shouted a blasphemous statement before fleeing. The disruption occurred during one of the most significant celebrations in the Christian calendar and caused distress among worshippers.

The incident occurred during the Vigil Mass on April 4 at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in San Vittorino, in Rome’s VI municipality. According to a statement published on the church’s official Facebook page, the disruption took place during the homily of the Easter Vigil — described by the parish as “the most important night for all of us Christians, because through His resurrection Christ has given us eternal life.”

The parish stated: “Last night during the Vigil Mass… someone thought it best to enter the Sanctuary during the homily, shout a blasphemy and run away.” Addressing the perpetrator directly, the church wrote: “To you who felt great and strong in shouting and then running away: know that courage does not lie in offending what is sacred to others. Courage lies in respect, in dialogue, in knowing how to look people in the eye.”

The statement continued: “You interrupted a prayer for a moment, but you did not take away anything from the meaning of that night. Because Easter speaks of light that conquers darkness, of goodness that endures even in the face of provocation.”
