Sculpture of Christ vandalised in Seine-et-Marne
A sculpture of Christ located in front of the church of Saint-Pathus was vandalised between the evening of 12 April and the morning of 13 April. The damage was described as deliberate, and French gendarmerie have opened an investigation to identify the perpetrator.
On the morning of 13 April 2026, residents of Saint-Pathus discovered that a sculpture of Christ located in front of the town’s church had been seriously damaged. The statue, positioned outside the church, was broken between the lower abdomen and upper legs, with fragments found scattered on the ground.
According to the president of the local heritage association Vieilles Pierres de Saint-Pathus, the damage is considered deliberate. The association, which is responsible for the protection of local heritage, filed a formal complaint for vandalism of cultural and religious property. Additional complaints were also submitted by the municipal authorities of Saint-Pathus and a local missionary organisation. "We don't want to let this pass. We still have a religious property that has been vandalized," eplained Lionel Miquet-Troisvalets, president of the Vieilles Pierres de Saint-Pathus.
The French gendarmerie stated that the act appears to have been intentional, with indications that a stone may have been used to inflict the damage. Investigators also reported the discovery of an electronic cigarette at the scene, which has been sent for DNA analysis. An investigation has been opened to identify the person or persons responsible.
