A church in Agia Marina, Chania, Greece, was damaged after an unknown individual fired a shotgun at its bell tower, cutting the bell rope and disabling the bell.
A church in Agia Marina, Crete, Greece, was targeted in a violent act of vandalism when an unknown individual fired a shotgun at its bell tower, damaging the structure and severing the bell rope, which rendered the bell unusable.
The damage was discovered by the local priest, Father Georgios Perakis, as he prepared the church for a religious feast. Upon inspection, he found the bell tower had been struck and the bell mechanism disabled.
Following the incident, Father Georgios repaired the damage himself and issued a public appeal for reconciliation rather than retaliation. In his message, he addressed the perpetrator directly, stating: “The person who targeted the bell and cut its rope… I pray they are never harmed by any weapon”, and also urged them to come forward and apologise. He further added a call for reconciliation, saying: “Free yourself as well.”
