Wave of Church Burglaries, Altar Desecration and Tabernacle Profanation Hits South Gironde
Between late April and early May 2026, several churches in South Gironde, France, were targeted in a series of burglaries and acts of vandalism. In the most serious incident, perpetrators opened a tabernacle containing consecrated hosts and desecrated the altar of a church in Villandraut, an act considered particularly grave in the Catholic faith.
A series of break-ins affected churches in South Gironde, including churches in Captieux, Préchac, and Villandraut between late April and early May 2026. Investigators noted similarities between the incidents, including forced entry and signs that church interiors had been searched.
The most serious damage was reported at the church in Villandraut. According to local authorities, intruders forced open the sacristy door, searched drawers and church offices, opened the tabernacle containing consecrated hosts, and desecrated the altar. The mayor of Villandraut stated that those discovering the scene were particularly shocked by “the chalice and the open tabernacle,” later adding: “The tabernacle was open. There are still overturned hosts.”
In the Catholic faith, the consecrated hosts are believed to be the Real Presence of Christ. The opening of the tabernacle and the scattering or desecration of consecrated hosts therefore constitute a particularly serious act of desecration.
In Préchac, intruders forced the church entrance lock but caused no interior damage. Local residents and parish volunteers nevertheless described the attacks as deeply disturbing, stressing that churches remain central to village identity and heritage, regardless of religious practice.
Investigations remain ongoing into the series of attacks affecting churches along the same route in southern Gironde.
