Vandalism at Drogheda church after recent arson attack at Tinure church

Country: Ireland

Date of incident: May 25, 2026

Mass-goers at St Augustine’s Church in Drogheda were shocked after discovering smashed planters and uprooted trees outside the church entrance, days after a deliberate fire inside Tinure church in County Louth.

St Augustine’s Church in Drogheda was targeted in an act of vandalism during the early hours of 25 May 2026, when decorative planters outside the church entrance were smashed and trees planted inside them were torn out and thrown to the ground.

The damage was discovered by parishioners arriving for Mass and caused visible shock among worshippers. Local representative Michael O’Dowd condemned the attack as “deeply disappointing and unacceptable”, stressing that acts targeting places of worship are particularly upsetting for local communities.

The incident comes less than two weeks after a deliberate fire at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Tinure (OIDAC reported), Monasterboice, where papers were set alight beneath a pew, filling the church with smoke and causing significant damage. Parish priest Fr Paddy Rushe stated that the church had been “very lucky” to avoid a larger fire.
