Vandals deface church in Legnano with obscene graffiti and blasphemies

Country: Italy

Date of incident: May 23, 2026

The historic Church of San Bernardino in Legnano was vandalised overnight with obscene graffiti and blasphemies prompting condemnation from local Catholic and civic leaders who described the attack as a serious assault on a place deeply tied to the city’s religious and cultural identity.

The Church of San Bernardino in Legnano was targeted by vandals during the night of 23–24 May 2026. According to local reports, unknown perpetrators covered the small historic church with vulgar graffiti and drawings, including several symbols and depictions relating to male genitalia, and blasphemies including "God is a pig", defacing a site regarded as one of the symbolic religious landmarks of the city and of the traditional Palio di Legnano.

In a public statement, Grand Master Alessandro Airoldi declared that respect for any place, "regardless of its nature, is an essential prerogative of a civil society and the people who make it up. If it is also a place of worship deeply rooted in the city tradition and a historical monument of our Palio in which the roots of a Contrada lie, the gesture made becomes even more serious and worthy of condemnation".

Local Catholic leaders also warned that beyond the material damage, the vandalism represented an attack on shared cultural and spiritual values that have shaped community life in the area for generations.
