Two Churches in Mittweida Vandalised: Organ Damaged and Water Flooding Caused

Country: Germany

Date of incident: June 1, 2026

Two churches in Mittweida were targeted in a series of vandalism incidents that caused water damage, defaced church property and impaired the functioning of the church organs. Police have launched an investigation and are seeking witnesses.

A church in Mittweida, Saxony, suffered multiple acts of vandalism over several weeks, resulting in water damage to the building and damage to its organ. According to police, unknown perpetrators tampered with a sink in the church's sanitary facilities, causing flooding and property damage of an as yet undetermined value.

The offenders also defaced a poster on church premises by writing a combination of letters on it using a black waterproof marker. In a separate act, they interfered with the church organ, affecting its sound and functionality. The full cost of repairs has not yet been established.

Police have opened an investigation on suspicion of criminal damage affecting property of public significance and are appealing for witnesses who may have observed suspicious activity or have information regarding those responsible.

The incidents come amid broader concerns about repeated acts of vandalism affecting churches in the Mittweida area. In a similar incident, the historic organ at the church in nearby Ringethal has been severely damaged.
