Cowdenbeath Baptist Church Hit for the Eighth Time, Suffers Extensive Damage

Country: United Kingdom

Date of incident: June 15, 2026

On 14 June 2026, Cowdenbeath Baptist Church was again targeted by vandals, who smashed windows, damaged the church's toilet facilities, and threw projectiles through the building. Church members described the repeated attacks as "soul destroying" and said the church had been vandalised up to eight times.

On 14 June 2026, unknown perpetrators vandalised Cowdenbeath Baptist Church on Chapel Street in Cowdenbeath. Windows were smashed, the women's toilets were damaged, and glass was scattered throughout the facilities, including over a baby-changing station. According to those associated with the church, large pieces of masonry, a pole and scaffold supports were thrown through the church windows, and young people were reportedly seen on the church roof during the incident.

The attack forms part of a pattern of repeated vandalism against the church. Isabel Hoey, a church member and volunteer, stated: "We're no sooner getting the windows fitted than they're re-smashing them," adding that she had "lost count" of the incidents, estimating that the church had been targeted up to eight times. She also noted that a brick had previously been thrown through a church window, covering children's toys in broken glass.

The damage forced the cancellation of activities organised by the Cowdenbeath Toddlers group, which meets at the church. Church members described the repeated attacks as "soul destroying."

Police Scotland confirmed that it had received a report of vandalism and stated that officers were pursuing a positive line of enquiry. Patricia Spacey, Safer Communities Manager at Fife Council, condemned the attack, calling vandalism against the church "unacceptable" and urging anyone with information to contact police.
