Consecrated Hosts Stolen from Rome Hospital Chapel
A tabernacle containing consecrated Hosts was stolen from the chapel of Aurelia Hospital in Rome, in what the Diocese of Rome described as a sacrilegious act against the Eucharist. The thieves also took offerings from the chapel, prompting the Diocese to announce a Mass of reparation.
The Diocese of Rome has expressed its “sorrow” and “deep distress” following the theft of a tabernacle containing consecrated Hosts from the chapel of Aurelia Hospital in Rome on 16 June 2026.
According to the Diocese, the tabernacle was forcibly removed from the pedestal to which it was anchored and taken away. Inside were consecrated Hosts, making the incident a particularly serious offense for Catholic believers. Offerings left by the faithful in the chapel's votive candle stands were also stolen.
Auxiliary Bishop Stefano Sparapani condemned the attack, stating: “We express our sorrow for yet another sacrilegious act committed against a church and the Eucharist.” He added that the Diocese was especially saddened for the many sick people who find spiritual support and consolation in the hospital chapel.
The Diocese announced that a new tabernacle will be installed and that a penitential rite, together with a Mass of reparation, will be celebrated as an act of prayer and reparation for the desecration.
The incident is the latest in a series of reported acts of desecration against churches in Rome in recent months, increasing concerns among local Catholics about attacks directed against sacred spaces and the Blessed Sacrament.
