Transfeminists attempt occupation of Compassionist Convent in Rome
Police prevented a group of transfeminists from attempting to occupy the area of Sant'Ignazio di Antiochia Parish which houses the Compassionist nuns.
On Saturday, June 27, police prevented the occupation of parish property in Rome along the Via Appia. The group attempting the occupation, described in reports as a "blitz", took advantage of a gap in the perimeter wall and entered the parish grounds by climbing over it.
After nuns from the church alerted the police, numerous patrols of Roman police intervened to prevent the occupation. Officers found a group of at least 15 people who had already gained access to the parish area. According to reports, the group known as FLINTA* (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-binary, Trans and Agender individuals) was attempting to create a new separate space where no "patriarchal violence threatens our bodies", as the group stated. The group appears to have been politically motivated, however, the reason for targeting the Compassionist convent was not reported.
A local senator denounced the group's actions, stating, "We condemn with absolute firmness the attempt to occupy the structure of the Compassionist Sisters near the Statuario Capanelle parish." Scurria further stated that thanks to the prompt reporting made by the nuns, the occupation was prevented.
