Artists Burn Crosses During Polish Music Festival
On 27–28 June 2026, two wooden crosses were deliberately set on fire during a performance at a metal music festival in Chwałków. While organisers described the act as an artistic performance, it deeply shocked the local Christian community, which regarded it as a desecration of one of Christianity's central religious symbols. Christian representatives further expressed concern that insults against Christians and the desecration of Christian symbols have become increasingly commonplace and that Christian symbols are being singled out in artistic performances in ways that symbols of other religions generally are not.
The incident took place during the Bangarang music festival, held from 27 to 28 June 2026 in Chwałków, Greater Poland. During a performance, members of the band Baalzagoth deliberately set fire to two wooden crosses on stage. According to reports, the festival received co-funding from the local authorities of the Gostyń district.
Festival organisers apologised, but defended the performance as an "artistic spectacle" which is a part of extreme forms of death metal and stated that, despite the public criticism, they would repeat the act in future performances. For members of the local Christian community, however, the deliberate burning of crosses constituted a desecration of one of Christianity's central religious symbols and an insult to their religious beliefs.
The incident prompted criticism from local political and Christian representatives. A councillor of Gostyń County announced legal steps aimed at preventing public funding for similar events in the future, stating:
“Public burning of the cross is not an art form. It is an act that offends the religious sentiments and values with which a vast majority of our society identifies.”
Dr. Artur Dąbrowski, representative of Catholic Action of the Archdiocese of Częstochowa, also condemned the performance, arguing that insults against Christians had gained “such momentum that the public was accustomed to the fact that Christian values can be desecrated.” He further expressed concern that Christian symbols are repeatedly singled out in artistic performances, whereas artists would not treat symbols of other religions in the same manner.
A formal complaint was filed following the incident, and police opened an investigation.
