Holy Synod Offices the Victim of Arson Attack by Molotov Cocktails

Country: Greece

Date of incident: August 8, 2016

The attack occurred at 3.10 a.m. when unidentified assailants, presumed to be anarchists, threw four Molotov cocktails into the yard of a church in central Athens, the Moni Petraki, which houses the central offices of the Church of Greece's Holy Synod. The molotov cocktails detonated, destroying two cars that had been parked outside.

Government spokeswoman Olga Gerovasili called the attack "abhorrent," and noted that efforts were underway to find the perpetrators.

"Religious freedom, as enshrined in the Constitution, and the unhindered practice of religious worship are strictly protected by the State and no act of violence against them can be tolerated," she said.
The Holy Synod issued the following statement: "After the invasion [of a group of anarchists] in Thessaloniki and attacks in other churches, an unknown group threw Molotov cocktails at the courtyard of the Holy Synod building. We pray that God forgives the perpetrators." (Translated from Greek).
