Historic Church Sprayed with Graffiti
The 12th century church of Santi Pietro e Paolo Castello Roganzuolo (Treviso) was marred with tags of marijuana leaves, insults to police, and the names of Italian hip-hop artists in green spray paint on the outer walls.
The mayor of San Fior, Gastone Martorel, responded to the incident by saying: "This was simply a shameful thing. We open these jewels to the public and then these things happen. It makes one want to close everything."
"I can not find the words for what happened," said Martorel, "because [the people who did this] really must be oblivious and do not recognize the values of things. The property is not municipal property, but we absolutely must do something. Tomorrow morning there will be a meeting to understand how to respond and what to do. We certainly cannot cover the city with cameras, but something must be done."
Residents of the small hamlet were indignant about the incident and published photographs on social media in an effort to identify the perpetrators.
