Anti-Christian Graffiti on Christian Bookstore in Lyon

Country: France

Date of incident: August 28, 2020

Employees of the CLC Christian bookstore, situated on the quai Tilsitt in Lyon, found red and white graffiti painted on all of their shop windows in the morning of August 29th. The messages included "Christianity is a sect that succeeded" or "Up there, God doesn't exist". A complaint was filed.

The store manager explained: "Graffiti of this kind occurs frequently, we find them every month, but this time I was surprised, there was graffiti on all the windows. [...] This is aiming both at catholics and other branches of Christianity. In fact, we are all targeted together. [...] We have to live with it, but this here is beyond the bounds."

Reactions to the incident were posted online. Azzedine Gaci, the director of the mosque in Villeurbanne, expressed his sentiments on Twitter: "I strongly condemn this despicable act and hope that the perpetrators will be found and brought to justice." Pascal Mailhos, prefect of AuRA (region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Rhône) also declared his support. French politician Gregory Doucet tweeted: "Tolerance is a value that we will defend at all costs. All my support to the Christian community."
