The Galician Government Removed Monument Dedicated to John Paul II

A monument, commemorating the visit of Pope John Paul ll, was removed by the Xunta de Galicia in March of 2021. They removed it because of its deterioration but it has recently become a problem since it doesn't seem to be getting reinstalled. The diocese of Galicia has tried to get in put back and the Christian Lawyers Association were collecting signatures to request its return. They claim that the authorities just wanted it removed and it could have easily been repaired so deterioration is not a sufficient reason.
Work had already begun to turn the area where the monument was into a "green space." It was said that deterioration was just an excuse "to do away with the sculpture" and "While they demolish our Christian symbols, they allow monuments dedicated to communists" to remain.
The Christian Lawyers Association claimed that politicians like Alberto Núñez Feijóo (Galician president) take advantage of their positions "to give in to the most radical and destroy Christian monuments." They vowed: "We will not allow any politician, regardless of party, to destroy our religious symbols." They plan to take the case to court if their administrative attempt fails.
