Threats for christians on easter persist

Country: France

Date of incident: March 28, 2024

France is placing police officers in front of Christian churches during Easter. In response to the recent attack in Moscow, the French police have issued a warning of an elevated risk of terrorism. As a precautionary measure, police officers will be stationed outside every Christian church during the Easter period.

In light of the current high level of terrorist threat and ongoing international tensions, France's Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, has called for police forces to be deployed outside every Christian church during the Easter weekend. The minister has urged for individuals to be visually inspected upon arrival to identify potential suspects. Furthermore, it is recommended to closely monitor parked vehicles near places of assembly or worship. According to the national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office (Pnat), two attack plans were foiled in France this year, one of which involved a planned violent Islamist attack against a Catholic organisation. One man has been charged and remanded in custody.

The Sri Lankan government is implementing heightened security measures to safeguard churches during the Holy Week and Easter holidays. The memory of the deadly attacks on Easter Sunday 2019 remains fresh in Sri Lanka. The recent attack on a concert hall in Moscow serves as a reminder that the threat of Islamist terrorist attacks persists.
