Vandalism and Threatening Letters at Gelting Cemetery
On 10th June, several graves were found vandalised in the cemetery of the church of St. Benedict in Gelting. Flowers were torn, vases were thrown over, and wooden crosses were pulled out of the ground. Anonymous threatening letters were also sent. Previously, there had been copper, metal and bronze thefts from this cemetery.
Gerhard Beham, the Dean of the Catholic Church, "Recently, graves have been desecrated in the cemetery in Gelting and anonymous threatening letters have been sent. Conspicuous, destructive actions that do not correspond to the spirit of a cemetery." The cemetery should be "a place of rest, farewell and remembrance. The dignity of the cemetery must be taken into account."
An employee of the church: "Out of consideration for those affected" she did not want to say anything more. "It is a very sensitive issue for the relatives."
Geretsried police: "It was pulled out of the ground and put back in the ground upside down. The police are investigating for disturbing the peace of the dead and damage to property. I have not heard of any of that in recent years."
