Vandalism at St Matthew's Cemetery in Cainscross

Country: United Kingdom

Date of incident: January 16, 2025

Vandalism at the churchyard of St Matthew’s Church in Cainscross has caused distress among families. The incident affected a space of religious significance for the local community.

As reported in January, broken bottles and smashed vases were found on several graves in the churchyard, indicating deliberate damage to items associated with burial and remembrance. The acts were described as distressing for relatives and members of the church community, as they affected a space regarded as sacred and dedicated to the memory of the deceased.

Reverend James Turk, team rector for the Stroud Team Ministry, emphasised the importance of the site, stating: “St Matthew's is a church and a community building for all of the community, Christian and non-Christian alike.” He added that “the community remains committed to maintaining the churchyard as a place of peace and reflection,” and called on local residents to support efforts to protect it. The church has urged anyone with information about anti-social behaviour in the churchyard to contact the police.
