Freshly Restored Church Entrance Defaced with Graffiti in Cádiz

Country: Spain

Date of incident: May 5, 2025

The entrance of a church in Cádiz was vandalised with graffiti shortly after restoration, affecting part of the city’s religious heritage. The act targeted the façade of a place of worship and caused concern among the local community.

The incident was reported on 6 May 2025 at the Church of San Juan de Dios, where graffiti was found on a column and its base forming part of the main entrance. The graffiti included crosses and various symbols and wirtings. The vandalism occurred only days after the completion of restoration works on the neoclassical portal.

The damaged area forms part of the architectural entrance to the church, a site of religious and historical significance. Members of the Hermandad de la Santa Caridad, who had supported the restoration, expressed concern over the damage. Their representative, José María Caravaca, highlighted the effort invested in restoring the structure and lamented that it had been defaced so soon after completion.
