Church in Vignola Defaced with Violent Political Graffiti

Country: Italy

Date of incident: May 21, 2025

A church in Vignola was vandalised with politically charged and violent graffiti. The slogans, referencing historical political violence, indicate an ideological motive beyond ordinary vandalism.

As reported on May 21, the incident concerns the Church of the Friars, where unknown perpetrators repeatedly sprayed graffiti on the church walls using red paint. The messages included phrases such as “Meloni come Moro” (referring to the 1978 kidnapping and killing of Aldo Moro), “Colpire i ricchi” (“Target the rich”), and “Sbirri assassini” (“Cops are murderers”).

The wording of the graffiti contains explicit references to political violence and revolutionary rhetoric, suggesting an ideological and potentially extremist dimension. The use of a church façade as a surface for these messages indicates that the building was deliberately chosen as a visible and symbolic location.

Reports indicate that similar graffiti has appeared repeatedly over a period of months, pointing to a pattern rather than an isolated act. The case also involves a nearby private property, suggesting a broader campaign of politically motivated vandalism in the area.

Public reaction has focused on the violent and historically charged nature of the slogans, particularly the reference to Aldo Moro, which evokes a period of political terrorism in Italy.
