St. Anton's Church in Vienna Vandalised With Anti-Religious Slogans

Country: Austria

Date of incident: May 31, 2025

The Church of St. Anton of Padua in Vienna’s 10th district, Favoriten, was once again defaced with graffiti, marking the third such incident within a short period. This time, the perpetrators spray-painted a mix of meaningless phrases and clear slogans with religious connotations on the church walls.

The writing was sprayed across the outer walls and the front doors of the church, discovered by parish staff on the morning of 31 May. Although the damage was quickly removed, the repeated nature of the attacks has left the parish deeply worried.

The local head of the district noted that these acts go beyond simple vandalism, suggesting "Beyond the fact of vandalism, these smurs are also disrespectful towards the believers and their faith community as a whole and must therefore be condemned in all clarity." While the perpetrators remain unknown, the priest has reported the incidents to the police and is urging for more frequent patrols in the area to protect the church and prevent further offenses. He added that the community feels increasingly disrespected, as the church should be a place of peace and reverence.

The Vienna-Favoriten police have launched an investigation. The parish is appealing for any witnesses or individuals with relevant information to come forward. Although no suspects have been identified, the nature and repetition of the incidents suggest a possible anti-Christian motive behind the attacks.
