Historic Chapel in Limbiate Vandalized Overnight

Country: Italy

Date of incident: July 25, 2025

Vandals broke into the small chapel at Villa Pusterla in Mombello di Limbiate and destroyed interior fixtures, decapitating the statue of Saint Anthony. Officials confirmed the incident as intentional vandalism and urged improved security.

In the night before 25 July 2025, vandals systematically damaged the interior of the Oratory of San Francesco, a historic chapel next to Villa Pusterla in Mombello di Limbiate. They severed the head of a revered statue of Saint Anthony and ransacked the rest of the chapel, despite there being nothing of apparent value to steal.

During the subsequent investigation, traces of fresh blood were discovered, indicating that at least one of the perpetrators had been injured during the attack. The Provincial Police and local officials inspected the site and submitted their findings to the Monza Prefecture. In response, the mayor of Limbiate renewed calls for better security measures, including installing an automated gate to prevent future unauthorised access.
