Province of Asturias Decides to Eliminate Religious Terms in Schools

Country: Spain

Date of incident: May 20, 2013

The region’s education minister Doña Ana González Rodríguez asked the schools to remove the words Christmas and Easter from their calendars.

Naming the holidays “winter vacation” and “end of second term holidays” was more acceptable to non Christians, according to the socialist Asturian government. That teachers and students will have to use these new terms in class rooms attracts criticism from several organisations and institutions like the Observatory for Religious Freedom and Freedom of Conscience and the National Catholic Confederation of Parents and Parents of Students (CONCAPA).
