Anti-abortion Campaigner Jailed

Country: United Kingdom

Date of incident: May 1, 2006

Anti-abortion campaigner jailed for sending abortion photo and video to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn, Norfolk, UK. He was subsequently denied urgently needed hip treatment.

Edward Atkinson, a 76-year-old man, was arrested and imprisoned for having sent to Ruth May, chief Executive of Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn pictures and a video of an abortion. As a result, not only was he imprisoned for a month, given a five-year anti-social behaviour order, and threatened with five years incarceration if he disobeys the order, but he was also denied the right to treatment. Although the pictures are extremely disturbing, nobody has denied their accuracy. 21 members of parliament signed a motion to protest the denial of treatment.
