The “Trinity Cross of the Order of Trinity” has been replaced by an “Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago” - a featuring a sun, stars, water and a map of the islands - as it was considered as offensive for non - Christians inhabitants.

The “Trinity Cross of the Order of Trinity”, a cross - shaped honour medal, established by the Queen of Britain in 1969, has been replaced by an “Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago” - a circular medal featuring a sun, stars, water and a map of the islands, because it was considered to be offensive for non - Christians inhabitants. The Caribbean islands' Muslim and Hindu communities - numbering about a third of their population of 1.3 million, argued that the words “Trinity” and “Cross” as well as a cross shape were “overtly Christian”. Five British law lords have ruled that this breached the right to equality and the right to freedom of conscience and belief. The Trinity Cross of the Order of Trinity has a long history. It has been handed to 62 distinguished residents of the former colony of Trinidad and Tobago over more than 40 years.
