"Not a Christian, but a Free Hungary" Called For by Socialist Leader

Country: Hungary

Date of incident: December 10, 2013

During the party congress of the leftist Democratic Coalition (DK) of Hungary, former Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány stated that, in opposition to the present ruling cabinet, they wanted "not a Christian but a free Hungary“. The re-elected chairman of the Democratic Coalition added they did not think "glory belongs to God alone, but to man.”

Bishop András Veres of Szombathely reacted to Gyurcsány’s address by pointing out that such statements were hardly doing justice to the European culture. The President of the Media Committee of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference said these sentences were much more reminiscent of the Church persecution of the Eastern, Soviet times. "The debate between two political sides is certainly not our concern;  however, such a rude verbal attack against Christians must be refused” – the Bishop added.
