Journalists’ Association Displays Anti-Christian Bias

Country: Croatia

Date of incident: January 10, 2015

A Croatian journalist was reprimanded by her professional association for calling abortion murder in an online article. While anti-Christian expressions are generally accepted as "a matter of style“, her Christian-inspired opinion was not tolerated.

Journalist Nikolina Nakić published a personal column on abortion on the Catholic web portal Bitno.net in February 2014. The article had been at the website for 10 months before another webportal shared it. A woman, offended by Mrs. Nakic’s opinion, then wrote a complaint to the Croatian Journalists' Association accusing her of offending women by calling abortion murder. The Croatian Journalists' Association reprimanded Mrs. Nakic by notifying her that she did not have the right to call abortion murder. This was widely covered by Croatian media. Mrs. Nakic answered: "With that decision the Journalists’ Association has shown their double standards – whenever an anti-Christian article filled with hatred was published, they find an excuse saying it was a matter of style or an expression of art. I find this decision unfair and embarrasing – as a journalist and as a woman.“
