Desecration in Gex and Colloges Churches in Pays de l'Ain France

Country: France

Date of incident: August 16, 2015

On Sunday, August 16, 2015, a ciborium containing consecrated hosts and chalice were stolen from the church of Gex. The same day, a ciborium, a chalice, and a reliquary, registered in the inventory of Historical Monuments, were stolen from the church of Collonges.

Since October of 2014, this is the 22nd time that desecration, theft or significant damage has occurred in the churches of Pays de l'Ain.
The Diocese of Belley-Ars expressed regret that holy objects such as chalices, chalices, reliquaries or tabernacles were stolen or damaged, noting the "profound lack of respect shown by the perpetrators. Catholics are especially deeply shocked by the theft of the consecrated hosts in Gex. According to the Diocese, "Whatever the intentions of the perpetrators, nothing more offensive can be committed against God, against the Christian faith and against the Catholic community".
