Creche Vandalized in la Grand-Place de Bruxelles

Country: Belgium

Date of incident: December 13, 2015

Three people aged 20, 21 and 24 were arrested after they vandalized the manger of the Grand-Place during the night from Saturday to Sunday. In addition to damaging the structure, they stole the figure of the baby Jesus and threw it on the ground.

They were released and repair costs will be charged to them, prosecutors said on Monday in Brussels. The three youths attracted the attention of the police assigned to the supervision of the Grand-Place when they threw an object onto the terrace of an establishment. The police investigated and found that the object thrown was the doll representing Jesus in the manger of the Grand-Place. The police found that the branches of the nursery trees were damaged, roof tiles had been removed and part of the frame of the manger was broken. The perpetrators stole the doll by breaking the bassinet and breaking two statues in the manger. The motive for this vandalism is unknown, but it should be noted that the doll representing Jesus could not have been stolen if the Brussels display had followed the Christian tradition of keeping the crib empty until Christmas Eve.
