Suspicious Burning of Nativity Display in Giraumont

Country: France

Date of incident: December 27, 2015

During the night between December 27th and 28th, the city's nativity display was burned and partially destroyed.

The wooden booth that housed the scene of the birth of Jesus resisted the flames, but the crib placed on pallets on straw and the rest of the installation were completely blackened. Mayor Jean-Claude Maffei commented that they can no longer use the installation and that it is deplorable, as the installation has been used for twenty years.  While the Mayor did not wish to dwell on the causes of the fire, he did note that it was odd that the crib was burned at night. Also noting that the electrical installation has been the same for years, powered by 12 volts. Captain Bucci, the officer in charge of the firefighters (and an electrician in civilian life) commented: "Electrically, the facility was well-protected. This was not tinkering ..." Additionally, other damage nearby was observed, including tagged garage doors and an electrical transformer.
