Seville Church the Victim of Burglary

Country: Spain

Date of incident: January 24, 2016

Thieves have stolen three silver ciboria, chalices and the contents of collection boxes from the Corpus Christi church.

The theft occurred during the early morning hours of Monday, January 24th after the perpetrators hid in the church after the last Mass on Sunday (the 23rd) and waited until the church was empty.
The theft was discovered on Monday morning when a group of parishioners who were about to prepare the Mass noticed that the tabernacle was open and Hosts lying on the ground. As a result, the first Mass on Monday had to be suspended.
The Archbishop of Seville plans to issue a statement confirming whether it will be treated as a desecration.
The National Police are investigating and are expected to view recordings of the last Mass after which the thieves hid until the church was empty.
