Arson in Calais Church
L’église Saint-Pierre suffered deliberate damage during the afternoon of Easter Monday: five separate fires started inside the building while it was open to the public. The abbot has filed a complaint.
Parishioners discovered the damage between 2:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon.The abbot suspects that the perpetrators took advantage of a moment when the church was empty.
The small organ was damaged, the Lectionary was burned, as was an altar cloth. The damage could amount to several thousand euros.
Mass scheduled for Tuesday morning was cancelled. The church, which had been closed for the purposes of the investigation was to reopen at 18 pm on Tuesday for a "reparation Mass", which is held when a church as been profaned in some way.
