Church Compared to Mafia in European Parliament

Country: European Institutions (EU, ECHR, et.al.)

Date of incident: May 12, 2010

In a meeting on child abuse, European Parliament Platform for Secularism says that Roman Catholic Church is protecting criminals and that its behavior is comparable to that of the Sicilian Mafia.

The Platform for Secularism chaired by Sophie in't Veld convened a meeting on child abuse and the Catholic Church at lunch time on May 12. About 35 people were present. The speakers were Dr. Margret Kennedy (NGO, UK), Marco Politi ("Il Fatto Quotidiano", Italy), and Hans-Peter Hurka ("We are Church", Austria). The claim that the Catholic Church is protecting criminals and that its behavior is comparable that of to the Sicilian Mafia remained uncontradicted. A suggestion was made by Marco Politi to establish a global symbol of repentance of the Church comparable to the symbols used in Germany to repent their Nazi history. It was also put forth that the European Union should establish an inquiry committee to monitor the Catholic Church. These ideas received the welcoming approval of European parliament member Sophie in't Veld. Source www.intoleranceagainstchristians.eu
